I like to head down to Long Beach Island before the summer starts, before the crowds and traffic so I can get out and explore the wind blown dunes and beach. I brought a book with me this time and arrived a few hours before sunset. After walking for a bit, I came across the sand dunes you see in the photograph, completely bathed in afternoon light. I had an idea in my head of what I wanted the photograph to look like, a moody strong photograph drawing out the textures of the sand and dune. I set up my camera and took out a book to read for a few hours until the sun created a scene that I could make a negative with and then use film processing and darkroom controls to take the rest of the way towards my vision. I have had a few different people tell me how the photograph makes them feel, what they see in it, and I absolutely love the fact that each persons interpretation is different!
